Food tracker with a barcode scanner

A food tracker is a calorie tracker that takes the food seriously — not just how much energy arrived, but what it arrived as. That distinction matters more than the calorie figure for most people's actual goals.

Tracking food, not only calories

Two days can land on the same calorie total and be completely different days. One is built on whole foods, hits its protein, clears 30 g of fibre and leaves you satisfied. The other is ultra-processed, short on protein, and leaves you hungry at 10pm.

A calorie counter records both as 2,000 and calls it a draw. A food tracker shows you why one of them worked.

The lines worth watching alongside calories:

  • Protein. The most satiating macronutrient per calorie and the one that protects muscle in a deficit. Around 1.6 g per kg of body weight if you are losing weight.
  • Fibre. Most people eat 15–20 g against a 25–30 g recommendation. It is the strongest single marker of overall diet quality and the easiest to move.
  • Saturated fat. Guidance suggests under about 10% of energy. This is where processed food accumulates without announcing itself.
  • Sodium. Around 2.4 g a day as a reference, and processed food gets there fast.
  • Added sugar. Distinct from naturally occurring sugar in fruit and milk, which is why a label's sugar line needs reading in context.

What scanning contributes

This level of detail is unbearable to enter by hand. Nobody types seven nutrient values per item for long.

Scanning makes it free. The database record already holds fibre, sugar, saturated fat and sodium, so capturing them costs exactly as much as capturing calories, which is one scan. That is the practical reason a food tracker needs a scanner: not speed for its own sake, but that detail without speed does not get recorded at all.

What a fortnight of records shows

Patterns that are invisible day to day:

The meal that runs heavy. Usually not the one people expect. Dinner is often fine; the gap between lunch and dinner is often not.

The weekend effect. Two days at +800 calories cancels a 320-a-day weekday deficit exactly. Plenty of people are eating at maintenance across the week while feeling they are dieting five days out of seven.

The protein shortfall. Almost always concentrated at breakfast and in snacks, which are the easiest slots to fix.

The fibre cliff. Days eating out routinely land at half the fibre of days cooking at home.

Food without a barcode

Most home cooking has no label. Three approaches, in order of accuracy:

Enter the recipe once. For something you cook regularly, log the ingredients once, record how many portions it makes, and reuse it. Most accurate, and the effort amortises quickly.

Log the components. Scan or search each ingredient as it goes in. Good for meals you assemble rather than cook.

Tracking without it becoming the point

Worth saying directly: detailed food tracking suits some people and harms others. If you have a history of disordered eating, logging every gram can entrench it, and this is a tool to approach cautiously or avoid.

For everyone else, the most useful pattern is temporary. Track closely for three or four weeks, learn what your normal actually looks like, then stop or track loosely. The value is in the education, not in the permanent record — most people who benefit end up tracking nothing at all and eating differently because of what they learned.

How do I track home-cooked meals with a barcode scanner?
Scan each ingredient as it goes in, or enter the recipe once with the number of portions it makes and reuse it. For food you did not cook, photograph the plate and let the AI scanner estimate it.
How much fibre should I be getting?
About 25–30 g a day. Most people in Western countries manage 15–20 g, so it is usually the easiest single line to improve and a good marker of overall diet quality.
Is food tracking suitable for everyone?
No. For anyone with a history of disordered eating it can entrench harmful patterns and is best avoided or approached with professional support. For most others it works best as a temporary exercise of a few weeks rather than a permanent habit.
